Spinning Karma

I’m so proud to share that Josh’s novel is published! It’s available for purchase through the publisher Camphor Press or at Amazon.

Spinning Karma
A reluctant American spiritual leader,
A fake viral video,
A media-driven propaganda war between America and China that spirals out of control.
Spinning Karma is the East-Collides-With-West farce the world needs – and deserves – now.

“I heartily recommend this cynical and funny book! If you don’t read it the winds of change shall destroy your serenity (or something of that nature).”
~ Eddie Pepitone, The Bitter Buddha

Can a New Age guru save his cult without losing his soul?

In an ill-conceived effort to bring his once-popular meditation group and its teachings back into the limelight, Rinpoche Edward Schwartz heads to Taiwan to fabricate an improvised “religious oppression” video – starring a group of clueless language students who think they’re taking part in an English conversation class.

The video goes viral and the scheme succeeds beyond Schwartz’s wildest expectations, triggering a media-driven propaganda war between the United States and China that spirals out of control.

Before long, everybody from spiritual seekers in China and America to the Chinese government itself wants a piece of Schwartz’s cult – and of Schwartz himself.

It has been such a pleasure witnessing this book come to life. I got to read earlier drafts and have enjoyed watching it transform into the polished final version. Josh finished this book while we were housesitting in Boston and we would discuss it while walking the owner’s dogs in the nearby cemetery. Spinning Karma is a very funny book that satirizes New Age spirituality and world politics. I highly recommend it!

Formosa Moon Year Anniversary!

IMG_20180318_142905_433

It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since Josh and I’s book Formosa Moon was published. Ever the faster blogger, Josh has already written up an anniversary post here.

In honor of Formosa Moon’s 1-year anniversary, we’re asking friends and readers in and out of Taiwan – to a little support behind the book, its authors, our publisher Things Asian Press, and of course, Taiwan. How can you help? Do read on!

Buy Formosa Moon:

If you haven’t already read Formosa Moon, go out and buy a copy from Amazon, Powell’s, or some other fine retailer.

Even if you’ve already read Formosa Moon, why not buy a copy for one of your pals who’s thinking of traveling abroad? It’s a great way to entice them to visit (and maybe even live in) Taiwan.

Review Formosa Moon:

If you have read Formosa Moon (or feel as if you have an intuitive grasp of the book from having followed our escapades online…who are we to judge, being as much a part of the information economy as anyone else), go and write up a review at Amazon, Powells or GoodReads (though at this point, a verified review on our Amazon page helps out the most.

Other ways to help:

Know someone who writes/reports on Taiwan/Asian news? Let them know about Formosa Moon.

Feel like introducing your favorite US Congressperson or Senator to Taiwan? Send them a copy of Formosa Moon! (Ted Cruz has a copy! Shouldn’t Bernie Sanders have one too?)

Are you a member of a book club? Suggest Formosa Moon as your next book.

Active on social media? Post a photo of yourself with Formosa Moon in front of something interesting on Twitter or Instagram with the hashtags #FormosaMoon #Taiwan.

Like Travel in Taiwan itself, the possibilities are endless.

As for the authors, Josh and I recently attended Boston’s TECO anniversary party for the National Day for the Republic of China (Taiwan). A write up of the event can be read here.

Formosa Moon Book Release Party

Josh and I’s book Formosa Moon was officially released October 1st, 2018. We had a great book release party at Taipei’s Red Room. (We actually had our party last October. I’ve just been too busy with grad school to blog.)

Our friend Carrie came out and we were delighted to see her. She has been incredibly supportive of this project and of us. Her site My Several Worlds chronicles her extensive travels and living with chronic illness. Her writing is powerful-do check out her site.

Roger from Goodoo Puppet Troupe came up from Tainan. Goodoo is our favorite puppet troupe in Taiwan and is featured in two chapters in our book. If you visit Taiwan, see one of their live puppet shows. They are phenomenal.

Since Josh and I were dressing up for the party I thought it appropriate that Floyd and Hazel did as well. Hazel’s outfit is repurposed clothes from a local clothing swap. Floyd’s new vest was made with leftover fabric from my sewing machine cover.

We read several chapters from the book. It was fun to get live reactions to our stories. Floyd and Hazel got an encore as did we!

Thank you to all our friends who came out to support us! Special thanks to our friend Tobie who helped keep as grounded as we set up and to Red Room for letting us use their beautiful and welcoming space. We had a great turnout and a wonderful night!

Didn’t make our book release party but still want to read our book? Buy a copy on Amazon here. Alternative booksellers are listed here.

Despite my side eye to the mascara, the experience was fun. The hair and make up person curled my hair and I swear I could feel it straightening back out during the interview.

Even Hazel and Floyd got spruced up!

Formosa Moon Advance Review Copy and our first interview!

We recently received the Advance Review Copy of Josh and I’s book Formosa Moon!

It’s so exciting to finally hold it in our hands. Though I will confess it’s a little surreal to see our photo on the cover.

Currently we’re proofreading the book looking for any errors and writing captions for the surprisingly large amount of photos. The book is large too; it numbers 329 pages.

Josh and I recently went up to Maokong to do some proofreading while enjoying coffee and the splendid views.

We had our first interview on James Thomas’ show 4 Seas 1 Family. You can listen to the interview here. The interview was fun to do even with Hazel and Floyd making unscheduled appearances. You can’t stop those two.
