Entanglement

Josh’s stepmom mailed me a box of gorgeous yarn with a request to make her a piece of art. I decided to weave a piece and add embellishments. During her and Josh’s dad visit we took them along the pedestrian bridge over the Umatilla River. I remember looking down at the river and soaking in the moment. This piece is based on that moment.

The warp is made with brown yarn to represent the earth. Blues, greens and grays represent the river. An undulating chevron pattern represents the movement of the water.

This piece is named Entanglement and explores the nebulous connection of family. I’m very pleased with how it turned out. Most of my art is for our immersive house art project so it was an interesting experience to create a piece specifically for someone else.

The back is lined with scrap fabric. To emphasize the nature theme I decided to hang this piece off a small branch from our backyard.

I particularly like how textured this piece is. Several of the yarns used are my handspun yarn. The warp tails were left long at the bottom to enhance the sense of movement.
